Chapter 20
âI think we have a hit on our hands, sweetheart,â Charlie said as he stood with Sarah to survey their guests, who were eating and drinking, talking and laughing, despite the heat and the power failure that had thrown them into chaos earlier. The sun was inching closer to the horizon, promising a spectacular sunset.
âSeems like it,â she said. âThanks to the kids and Seamus for bringing more ice.â
âIt helps to have well-connected friends.â
âFor sure.â
âWhoâs that young lady Jeff is talking to?â Sarah asked.
âThatâs Mac and Maddieâs au pair, Kelsey. I hear sheâs a delightful girl.â
âShe sure is pretty.â
âIndeed.â Charlie looked down at her. âWhy are you biting that poor lip?â
âI worry about him. Even though he seems to be doing so much better than he was, heâs still so young and unsettled.â
âHeâll find his way, just like the others have. Heâs doing great, a college grad and lots of opportunities to explore.â
âI suppose. Did John say anything to you about an issue at work? I heard him on the phone, but I didnât want to ask.â
âHe referred to an argument with a superior officer, but I didnât get the details.â
âOh jeez. I hope heâs not in trouble.â
âI didnât want to pry, so I didnât ask any questions. Just let him know Iâm available if he needs to talk. He said heâs surprised Iâd welcome a police officer into my home after what I went through.â
âWhat did you say?â
âThat as Sarahâs son, heâs always welcome in my home and that I donât blame the police for what happened to me. I blame my ex-wife, who was the one to hurt my daughter and who allowed me to take the blame for what she did.â
âThank you for making him feel welcome.â
âOf course he is. He didnât lock me up for someone elseâs crime. I donât look at him and see all law enforcement. I look at him and see your son. My stepson. A member of our family.â
âI love you, Charlie.â
âI love you, too, Sarah.â He smiled down at her. âCheck us out, huh? This amazing house, our beautiful kids, all these incredible friends. How lucky are we?â
âThe luckiest people I know.â
âWho had the shittiest luck ever until they found each other and everything changed.â
She crooked her finger to bring him down for a kiss.
âUm, excuse us, you lovebirds.â
She released Charlie and turned to Big Mac and Linda. Sarahâs went hot with embarrassment. âSorry.â
âPlease donât be,â Linda said. âYou two are adorable together.â
âNot sure how I feel about being called adorable,â Charlie said gruffly.
âYou should feel pretty good about it,â Linda said. âIâm so, so happy for you both. Your house is absolutely gorgeous, and we wish you many, many happy years here.â
âThank you so much, Linda,â Sarah said, hugging the other woman.
âCongratulations, guys,â Big Mac said. âItâs a beaut. One word of advice? Get one of those whole-home generators thatâre all the rage. We love ours. Damned grateful for it today.â
âThatâs at the top of my list of priorities,â Charlie said.
